Getting new gear and getting rid of old ones

On this season´s hunting trips I have found out that I lack of some items which could make hunting more comfortable:
- I lack good quality small & light binoculars. I have old heavy ones made in USSR that I bought from fleamarket with 6 euros some year ago
- I have found backpack ankward to carry when needed to shoot fast with a shotgun. My backpacks quite wide shoulder straps comes in the way when raising shotgun stock into shooting position. I tried finnish army gas-mask shoulder pack, but it was not so great for the purpose. Normally when I´m wandering around woods with shotgun ready for escaping birds I don´t need much stuff with me so smallish shoulder back would be enough. What I need to carry are:
- EDC survival tin
- firesteel & matches
- pocket knife, SAK
- compass (maybe gps)
- map, hunting license, hunting permit for an area
- pen & paper
- mobile phone
- 0,5l Thermos bottle filled with hot drink
- snacks (bread, muesli-bar, candy, chocolate)
- maglite or like pocket torch
- folding sitting foam pad
- plastic bags, cordage
- space blanket
- hunting knife (goes normally on belt)
- Binoculars (belt pouch, shoulder bag, on my neck)
- Sometime laser rangefinder (on my pocket or shoulder bag)

So I made some gear exchange with guys Perkunas and Akiri and got:
- Minox waterproof binoculars 10x25
- ATM 6x25 laser rangefinder
- 5.11 Push Pack shoulder bag

I haven´t really test those in action, but so far feels good. Report will follow later...

  1. That looks like a good gear list for hunting. The new stuff you got should complete it nicely.

Have you thought about using your bow and arrows for hunting, or will that come later for larger animals after you have gained more general hunting experience?

  2. Hunting actual "large" game is quite impossible to many, thanks to laws and regulations, but its also maybe a good thing, as permit-free hunting weapon like powerful modern bow, in hands of un-skilled user, might mean injured game wondering in the bush before dying slowly by bleeding. Well, it can happen with both, small ad big game too, but a big animal thats hurt, is a bigger problem when they run across roads etc.

Not saying that youre un-skilled, but generally speaking. I am perhaps, after all, ok with tight hinting & weapon laws, as they still prevent un necessary suffering and serve the purpose. Still... i sure would love to see the time when men can wonder in the woods with reel, rod, shotgun, bow and rifle, enabling you to live off the land a lot better and stay in the bush for longer perioids. Nostalgy....oh man.

  3. True what Perkunas said. But in skilled and responsible hands decent bow & arrow is as powerful as rifle. The thing is that you need to get very close to your game with bow & arrow to get decent hit where with rifle and little practise you can get decent hit from 3-4 times more far than arrow.
What comes to hunt generally with firearms or bows I would like to hunt also bigger game in the future, but at the moment it´s not possible for me.
At the moment I hunt mainly with my rifles and shotgun starting slowly gain experience for bowhunting also.
