Fish had quite big and sharp bones so I got idea to try to make needle out of it. So I started to shape it to bit and drilled hole with my trusty Victorinox.

Haven´t really tried that needle yet, but I think it will work fine atleast on lighter works.
This time I want to introduce you asian style utility blade called "kiridashi".
It´s made by my good friend from Bush ´n Blade blog.

Blade is one solid piece of high carbon steel (from old file). Handle is made from paracord inner strands under and outer cover on top and tied same way than in traditional samurai swords.

Edge is chisel ground and really razor sharp with polished bevels and it´s straight side is a little bit convexed that you hardly notice it.

Sheath was not included cause I wanted to make my own, maybe necker type of sheath..Let´s see.

I don´t have much user experience from it yet, but it feels like very good all round cutter.

Bushcraft Finland Forum knifeWe have been thinking own BCFIN knife on our forum for long time and few months ago plans were ready and we choosed maker to be from our forum as well Ilkka Seikku who we already know that can do affordable, high quality knives.

We wanted something do-it-all-type of knife that is compact enough for typical puukko-tasks, but have some length and heft for heavier tasks like light chopping aswell.

We wanted it to be clearly puukko in finnish style and from natural materials. So no full tangs even they are nearly indestructible and no modern materials like kydex or micarta.

It also should be unique so we didn´t want any mass produced knife with just our logo stamped on it.

We all give ideas and Algiz from Old Path Blog draw design we all accepted.
Knife is made in small batches and only available on BCFIN forum members.

So here we go:

Also I have spent quite a lot of time with Bushcraft Finland Forum which I moved to commercial operator from free service cause free server had a lot of problems and downtime. Now everything works well and we have very active finnish group there and not so active international side, which we hope to get more chatters in the future.

Knife

I have been long time wanted to make very simple knife commonly called "maasepän puukko" in finnish. Idea of that knife was that blade is hand forged (this time I got it readymade), handle simple carved with knife without bolsters and no modern glues used. Only electric tool was a drill cause I simply don´t have any hand drills yet. I´m curious to see how this thing will last of fair use (not abuse, but normal knife use), cause trend seems to be that bushcraft knives should be overbuilt-fulltang-jack-of-all-trades-workhorses. :)

So here we go:

First step was to get some wood just from the woodshed and start to shape it after drilling hole and shaping it with saw-bit.

I thought to make birch bark sheath for my knife so next thing is to make wooden insert (lesta). I´m going to make rectangular insert to fit better on birchbark weaved sheath (let´s see if I can get it done, cause my weaving skills are not so good and also birch bark pieces I have are bit small..)
Mostly I use that hook for moving cut branches away and it also protects blade when you cut near ground (hook hits ground when blade is untouched).
There´s one and two handled model and it´s very handy for clearing saplings and even small trees aswell as general purpose bladed tool for all kind of heavy woodcutting.
Novadays Fiskars made some 95% of billhooks in Finland and it´s modern glassfibrereinforced plastic handled with teflon coated blade. It´s great and strong tool, but not so traditional. There´s still makers of traditional billhooks and here are few:

Metallituote Saarela Oy

You can also find often very good old handforged billhooks from fleamarkets, huuto.net (like ebay).
Here´s one I just got for 15€:

Seller said that it´s from 1930-1940 and maker unknown. Overall length is 55cm and cutting edge around 23cm, blade 5mm thick. It´s little heavier side and can be used one or two handed (barely). Blade is very good condition and ready to work. Handle is roughly carved (replacement I think) and have bit leuku like poll. It´s attached into blade with two flathead screws.
I think I´m going to make new bit longer handle at some point.
Tip: Billhooks could be very good low cost alternative for heavy leuku when you just cut hook off to get like sheepfoot style tip. (it´s known to be used like that among reindeer herders of Lappland, where axe have mostly no use cause there´s no big trees).
I started to make one in our backyard.
First you collect pile of snow let´s say 2x3m and some 1,5m high. Then wait for few hours so snow becomes harder (you can beat pile with your shovel a bit to make process faster) after that if you want you can push around 30cm stick around pile to avoid thinning it´s walls too much when digging the cave. If you want to make things simple and there´s two guys digging you can do it from opposite directions and close one end of the tunnel at the end. Then you make breathing hole into ceiling with skipole or like and you can leave it there so you can open breathing channel if snowing. You can also make your "bed" higher than cave floor to let cold air go down there. Doorway you simply close with your rucksack for example.

My pile was too short cause there was lack of snow, but right now it´s snowing so I can lenghten it and then sleep on it overnight later. So, to be continued...
It was free server based and have run ok for few years, but have recently been soo slow and offline from time to time so I decided to move forum for finnish server, which isn´t free anymore though :( With great help of our BCFIN-members we have copied most of the content from old forum very fast (cause free server don´t allow backup databases). We want to keep that forum active and encourage members to share information there actively.

It was 2 days happening starting on saturday and ending sunday. I only reachead place on saturday evening cause I was on summer holiday with my family and came back home quite late and needed to drive to Helsinki to pickup TimoA who was new face on our forum and wanted to attend that meet which was open to everybody. We decided to take bicycles into my car and leave car on start of one logging road where´s few kilometers to meeting point. So we did and reached place around 21:00 on evening and it was very easy to follow camp fire smoke and loud laughter to find other guys cooking lunch around campfire. :)
We didn´t had any "official program" there it was just mainly chatting around campfire and getting to know each other cause there was many newbies there. Sure we tried there many things and people learned new skills & tricks.
It´s just cause I have been so busy with my daily life and have had some stuggles so I didn´t had time nor energy to concentrate writing. I still have many stories to tell from last summer and this autumn so you will see some blasts from the past when I´m trying to catch up. So stay tuned!
Those are best made when skin is easy to get out without breaking and that late spring / summer time. The trick is to twist skin out one piece to complete whistle inside and then push it back. Tapping with knife handle before twisting will also help to get skin off.
So I collect some stinging nettles around my house far end from road and cut them small into my cast iron wok to fry with little bit of oil (frying or fast boiling eliminate those acid spikes).

After frying they shrinked a lot and were good to eat. Stinging nettles were too grown up already and had too strong and woody shaft. Leaves were great.

Later I collected more leaves to make tea out of it and I also found some rasberry leaves to add some sweetness.

I kept (bit crushed) leaves on hot water around 30 minutes and get great fresh and strong drink, highly recommended!
Stinging nettles are very traditional plant for food and it´s very nutricious and healthy even more than spinach and it could be used same way.

Stinging nettles also have very strong fibers for cordage making (haven´t tried that one yet)Finnmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17476066793603183289noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6268522597035869474.post-87230641333346378622012-05-26T11:45:00.001+03:002012-05-30T08:55:02.783+03:00Another knife teaser..

So we finally got our very first winter meeting for BCFIN forum. There was 7 of us all together and meeting was short, but simply great. Weather was in few plus degrees when we arrived and parked our car few kilometers from meeting place somewhere middle of Finland. So we packed and checked our rucksacks prepared to have some nice snowshoeing into the place. Ozme have made small "ahkio" from children´s pulk to carry his shelter and some other gear easier.
After 20-30min hike we arrived and Rautasarvi, Perkunas & Ukkonen were already there digging snow so fastly unpacked and took our showels to get campsite ready. It was first time for me to meet Rautasarvi & Ukkonen, other guys I was familiar already. So it was really nice to see new faces that we have just met online before.
So we took off snow shoes dropped our bags and started to build up "camp". We decided to make few snow caves or rather "shelf" cause weather was + degrees and not so sure if caves will stand.
There´s also cabin meant for cooking and it can be used for sleeping only if you really have to.
After snow works it was time to gather around fire to dry we gloves and other clothes. So people enjoyed warmth of the fire chatting.

Now everyone started to feel bit hungry so it was time to eat someting. Some fried bacons or sausages and some just grabbed piece of bread with hot coffee.

So after eating people start to chat and get to know each other, cause many of them haven´t meet ever before in live. In our international group there was 5 guys from Finland, one from USA and one from Japan. We didn´t plan any scheduled program here cause it was first bigger meeting (first one had 3 people) which main idea was getting to know each others and simply enjoy good time in nature. Everybody sure bring packful of gear with them so time passes nicely comparing what each one use to carry and why. When it day started to turn evening me and Perkunas got idea to demonstrate very traditional finnish cooking fire "raappanan tuli" which was often made by lumberjacks.
Raappanan tuli looks little bit like "jätkän kynttilä" (finnish log candle) which is log cross sawn with chainsaw and lit standing on groun. Raappanan tuli is more simple it´s log that have split nearly from middle and then from thicker half one slice split off that you have two equal thick halves and one 1-2cm slice which will cut pieces and shavings to lit raappanan tuli. Next thing is to cut grooves / shavings for both halves with and axe to let fire really get into halves. After that you simply build that log again leaving 1-2cm gap between halves and light it up. When it´s burning well you have staple plate to put your pot or koffee kettle on top of fire to cook. Nice trick is to add 4 small stones under the pot to let fire breathe better.
Cause we already started to make traditional fires Perkunas continued with other very traditional long burning fire which have given warmth and comfort finnish outdoorsman for centuries in cold nights.
That we call "rakotuli" or "rakovalkea" which is directly translated as "gap fire" Somewhere I have heard it also called "long log fire" and it have often build using three logs, but originally it´s made using only two. Perkunas made good job building up "mini" version of that "rakotuli" cause we didn´t have long enough logs available. You can find detailed description from it here: Perkunas blog
So it looks like even not planned this meeting´s carrying theme was fire, so we continued practising fire making with flint & steel. Some of us had own flint & steels with them, but Rautasarvi have kindly forged some for those who didn´t have their own and also bring "taula" made from tinder fungus. So everyone were striking sparks trying to make tinder glowing. Man it´s not that easy at all.

I wanted to try to make "charred cloth" first to catch the spark cause haven´t tried that one before. I have bring some cotton fabric in metallic air gun pellet container which I wanted to char. To char it you simply press small hole into container and place it on fire. Soon smoke will come out from the hole and when there´s not much smoke anymore it´s ready. I char it bit too long, but it worked still being just very fragile.

After those exercises it was already late and dark so people prepared their sleeping bags and gathered around fire for story telling and barbequeing sausages. Some had can of beer with them and OzMe bring small bottle of brandy. Evening changed fastly to night. Sky was clear and stars bright when people started to prepare some sleep. Someone throw last log into fire releasing swarm of sparks into the cool fresh air.
I noticed earlier that I have forgot my sleeping mattress home and luckily OzMe had bring two pieces so he borrowed me one Halti brand airmatress. That one was quite poor cause it was so thin and I couldn´t fill it well by blowing air in, maybe those are just not for winter. So I put any extra stuff I found under my sleeping bag like tarpaulin, some clothes, foam sitting pad etc.
I have also borrowed US Army bivy sack from Akiri to try it out, cause I have never tried bivy before. When I had adjusted myself and crawled inside of my Savotta military winter bag I fall in sleep like a child. Later at night when I had to go to pee maybe 2-3am, I noticed that weather was changed much colder maybe some -10C degrees and it full painfull to get up and crawl out from quite warm bag, but nature calls. :)
At morning I woke up around 7am and slept quite well but felt bit cold from ground. Decent sleeping mattress could make significant difference I think.
Next day there was atleast two activities in program: item swap and goodie box "lottery"
Some of us had bring extra stuff they don´t need to exchange with other. So cabin table was soon full of books, cooking equipment, compasses, knives, axes, pocket knives, etc. I think it was succesfull cause I saw quite many people happily leaving table carrying some new "treasures"

Myself I got leather possibles pouch from Perkunas and Selfmade puukko from OzMe.
Last thing before leaving was "lottery of BCFIN goodiebag" Ideas father was Akiri who couldn´t attend meeting but generously gave goodiebag with some content into our lottery. So idea was that everyone who attend put secretly someting inside of bag and then lucky winner will get decent amount of goodies and we thought this nice tradition to continue into future meetings.
I was lucky enough to win this bag this time and yes it contained a lot of usefull stuff which I will tell more here later in future postings.
I made it using just wood, some iron wire and my knife. First I got straight stick of dead birch wood and cut it to right length from wider end. Next step was to make sompa where I used fresh willow as it is for round and other one split half for binding. I tied round with iron wire (later noticed that iron wire was not even necessary but left it to keep construction bit stronger. Sapling are easiest to split just by making start with knife and continue with bare hands and dry to keep split as middle as possible, go slow. Before binding I made sapling fibers stronger by twisting them strongly an even crushing a bit with the back of my knife.

Later when I tried that stick it´s working nicely in deep snow.

That´s good little practise of your DIY-skills. Try to make your own and post me some feedback on comments section! :)
For my interest there are: hiking, fishing, hunting exhibitions and offcourse military surplus stores like Varusteleka always have some good exhibition discounts.
So I left there on sunny sunday morning with my 4 years old son, cause I knew that there will be a lot to see for him also and it´s always better than being home.

First stop was SJML (Suomen jousimetsästäjäin liitto / Finnish bowhunters union) to talk with couple of friends there. There you can get good amount of information about bow hunting in Finland and try longbow shooting yourself.
Fjällräven stand had some of their new products and a lot of information about their great cotton based tightly woven G1000 fabric and how to make it water / dirtproof with their Greenland Wax. When Gore-Tex is everywhere they still trust strongly their G1000 which is sturdier and breaths much better than any Goretex material. They told that they are going to offer waxing services in some selected outoor shops gor G1000 products.
I got hunk of Greenland Wax from them to try it out, so report will follow, thanks Fjällräven.
Here´s video how to wax your Fjällräven garment (or other similar type of material)
I especially liked these aluminum Bento 70 / 270 containers with very tight rubber lid which keeps moisture in (or out). Smaller one could be really good for carrying butter in hikes.
Kivikangas Oy offers wide range of fishing equipment like nets katiskas etc. but also High quality nearly hand made Ahti-puukkos that are built in Kauhava, Southern Ostrobotnia by veteran knifemaker Reino Kamppila. They carry name Ahti. Ahti puukko´s have very well shaped and fits hand like a glove. Handles are oiled curly birch which offers very good grip in any situation. Blades are from Lauri´s blade factory and carbon steel (0,8% carbon and some added vanadium). Blades are full length tangs with the end of the tang visible at the pommel end of the handle. They are definitely good users and offers great value for money. My favorite was model "Vaara". Production is limited, but overal quality is very satisfactory.
Order yours from Kivikangas website before Reino is too old to make those anymore (for US customers Ragweed Forge offer them).
Cottage was big and meant for larger groups and located just near sea. After nearly 4 hours driving on harsh weather when snow pouring from sky we finally arrived there and didn´t get stuck on snow on narrow forestroads which was near. So after got kids sleeping it was time to have a supper and put hunting equipment ready cause we have decided to leave for hare hunting early in saturday morning and come back in afternoon when 3rd family will be there already and some other friends of hosts who came to visit on saturday.

Saturday morning had perfect weather for hunting. Snowing have stopped at night and new tracks of animals were quite easy to spot. Our hunting area was just around 10-15 drive away and some half hour hike with skis / snow shoes. I wanted to try snowshoes and my friend E used his old swedish army forest skis.

These new snowshoes are much smaller than my traditional style us army snowhoes, but carries very well also.

An open fields where snow was not that much skis were pretty good even near 0 deg temp they didn´t slide that well. But when we came into rocky forest area there snowshoes could show it´s "claws". E left his skis and trusted his long rubber boots being enough cause skis were extremely difficult to use there.

After some seeking we found fresh hare tracks and started to follow those to get it out of it´s hiding place. Soon I got firs eye contact on snow white forest hare, but it run over narrow open area bit too far for me to try to shoot with a shotgun, so I followed it´s tracks to it´s hiding place (where they often come back after some running around) and E went after the hare. I waited some 40-50 minutes there and no sign of returning hare. Then E called me that he and his brother have found tracks that hare have went more far and seems not coming back so I changed my position. That time there was 4 of us hunting together and trying to trap that hare.

We did our very best and still that forest hare was more clever, good for him! We were thinking to leave when we discovered new tracks this time brown hare and I started to follow them with E´s brother. Then suddenly I saw big bird somekind of hawk on tree and it attacked on hare! We discovered some hair and blood on snow after the fight so we lost that chance aswell.
We have been already out around 6 hours and we didn´t take much food with us cause ladies are going to prepare good meal on cottage so we headed back it would take anyway some half hour to reach our car.

Wind was so strong that big spruce from neighbour side fell on top of my woodshed that I just built year ago.

So there was no damage on my land only one tree was fallen cutting logging road which leads to area. I was prepared for that and had chainsaw on trunk of my car so I could continue fast.

I have been planning to build kota-shelter and fireplace to make permanent camp on area and later cabin of some kind. So I started wandering area to look good spot for camp and when found started to look fallen trees to make poles for shelter and carry stones for fireplace. There I also had chance to test out old famous finnish "war knife" Sissipuukko m95 (known as "Ranger knife" in english), Sissipuukko is designed by J.P.Peltonen and these are made together with Fiskars.
I have thought to prepare lunch on woods, but wind was still very strong so I ended up to make my fire on small hole to get cover from strong wind. It was getting dark already so I have to act fast. I took small fallen halfly wet small 6-7cm diameter tree, sectioned and batoned it for firewood. It was too damp so I needed something more dry stuff also. I collected some lower dead branches of spruce trees. Those was not completely dry neither.
After that I prepared my fire place on bottom of hole by adding some sand there with small folding showel I got from my buddy sometime ago. I haven´t really used it before that. Showel was surprisingly sturdy and worked well for small digging tasks. I also noticed that inside of the hollow handle there´s space for some essential small items if you want to, toilet paper for example?
I started to prepare my fire and noticed that it was still a bit too windy so I grabbed my poncho from backpack and build a bit of extra cover with that and few meters of iron wire I always carry with me. Now I had good means for cooking so I whittlet some tiny fuzzies with my knife and prepared bunches of spruce twigs nearby. It took quite long while that I got fire going well enough and got enough coals and heat that even bit wet wood will start to burn.
I have prepared very simple meal for me: can of peasoup, rye bread, some xmas ham leftovers with mustard. Now I also had chance to test brand new Zebra pot (got it xmas gift from a friend), smallest 10cm diameter and I found it just good size for one man´s soup. I have used bigger 14cm diameter pot for years so I knew what to expect. Those pots are great for cooking over fire and being stainless steel will last forever and won´t contaminate your food at all like aluminum can do (I don´t consider that so serious anyway). After forawhile I had nice hot soup ready to eat. It´s incredible how delicious simple food like that can be in the bush when you feel a bit cold and make a lot of effort to get your food heated. So I happily enjoyed my meal while watching stars and slowly dying fire. After last red coals turned black I packed my stuff, poured water on my fireplace and threw some sand and soil on top of it to hide black remains of my cooking fire. Time to head back to the logging road and car. Moments like that alone in woods just with your own thoughts staring fire, sounds of nature surrounding makes great things for my head after all christmas hassle and busy family life.

My friend
came to visit for Christmas in Finland from Singapore and she bring me a knife
from her trip to Philippines cause she knew that I´m kind of “knife nuts”. She
asked there parang and something handmade. So she got this and it´s somekind of
mix of a parang and western style bowie with sawback and weird notch on back
which is maybe decoration.

I can see
that it´s definitely handmade due the unevenness, but I think blade is “machine
cut” into shape and then heat treated and sharpened. Tang is stick tang and
goes through handle. Handle is bent downward and have decorated head . Handle
looks like ones parangs have. Handle material something hard black stuff I´m
not so professional to tell what it is, but I think it´s somekind of natural
material.

Blade is
around 4-5mm thick and made of carbon steel. It have concave grind and
secondary bevel just like bowies normally do. Sharpening starts quite far and
there´s 2-3cm of unused part on the blade so I thought to make choil for
fingers so I can choke up for finer tasks like whittling something or so.

Sheath is cheaply made somekind of fabric /
nylon riveted together with maybe carton(?) insert. I have to remake sheath
definitely. Traditionally parangs have wooden sheath that is wrapped around
waist with piece of cord.

Cause all
my blades are users so also this will not end up on the wall so I´m going to
test it today how it works. It´s anyway very interesting and different from my
other blades so I´m interested to see how it works out for me.
